IRBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The death toll from the protests in Iraq has risen to 74, with hundreds injured since demonstrators marched on Friday in the second wave of protests that began early this month, the UN Human Rights Commission said.
The UNHCR said in a statement issued on Sunday evening that the number of deaths of the demonstrations reached 74 protesters, most of whom fell "by gunfire as a result of the clashes between the demonstrators and the protection of party headquarters when trying to enter them, in addition to cases of suffocation due to tear gas."
According to security and medical sources for Kurdistan 24, most of the victims were killed in the southern cities, especially in Nasiriyah, Amara and Hilla.
Protests in Iraq have been fueled once again to demand the departure of the political elite, accusing it of failing to improve living conditions, widespread corruption, unemployment and poor services.
School and university students have joined the protests since yesterday amid calls to go on strike despite government warnings, correspondents said.
Witnesses and demonstrators said dozens of university students in Baghdad and provinces roamed the streets and chanted anti-government and corrupt slogans.
Many called for a strike, with one holding a banner reading "Mako Homeland, Mako Dawa".
But government spokesman Saad al-Hadithi told local media all staff and students should not comply with calls for disobedience and strike.
In previous protests, about 147 people were killed and thousands injured, the most significant challenge facing Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi's government.
