Agence France-Presse said that the Biden administration wants to extend a hand to the Iraqi government by extending the exemption to import energy from Iran, ahead of the strategic dialogue scheduled to begin on the seventh of April.
The agency added, in its report, that Iraq imports from Iran a third of its consumption needs of gas and electricity due to its dilapidated infrastructure that makes it unable to achieve self-sufficiency to secure the needs of its population.
The report emphasized that Baghdad must resolve disputed points with Tehran, which is demanding it pay more than $ 6 billion in arrears, which are bills owed by the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, which US sanctions prevent from paying any dollar to Tehran .. However, Western and Iraqi sources told AFP that Iraqi officials were given a green light from Washington to release the two billion dollars owed to Iran for gas imports, through a Swiss bank account.
