UN welcomes Iraqi parliament speaker's election

    15/07/2014   |   11:15 PM | Gulf News

BAGHDAD, July 15 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary General's Iraq Representative Nickolay Mladenov Tuesday welcomed the election of an Iraq parliament speaker and urged the House of Representatives to proceed and name the President and Prime Minister.

Mladenov, in a statement, congratulated the Iraqi parliament for the election of Salim Jabouri, a member of National Forces Alliance who received 194 votes, against 10 to MP Shorouq Al-Abaiji, of the Civil Democratic Alliance, who was running for the speakership.

"An important step has been adopted today to resume the democratic process in Iraq," said the UN envoy.

He urged the Iraqi political leaders to continue their role and elect a president of the republic and a prime minister. (end) mhg.bs
