Iraq entered a constitutional vacuum after the parliament failed, since its first session, on February 9, to elect a president.
Forty candidates are competing for the presidency, led by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the current President of the Republic, Barham Salih, and the Kurdistan Democratic Party's candidate, Reber Ahmed. According to the prevailing custom in Iraq, the three presidencies are distributed among the three components (Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds).As a Kurd, positions in Baghdad and the Kurdistan region are divided between the two main Kurdish parties according to a written agreement between them.
