    [rtl]Baghdad - Conscious - Amna Al-Salami
Today, Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture clarified the reasons for stopping work on the agricultural calendar, while it addressed the Ministerial Council of Economy to stop importing the tomato crop.
“The ministry has an agricultural calendar that controls the import and export process, and therefore when any crop is available in the market, the ministry prevents its import, in order to protect the local product,” Hamid al-Nayef, a spokesman for the ministry, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
And he added, “During the past year 2021, the previous government worked to open the import door wide, and suspended work on the agricultural calendar, and thus this matter was transferred to the Ministerial Council of Economy,” explaining that “any local abundance of agricultural crops, the ministry submits a letter to the Ministerial Council of Economy.” .
He stressed that "the ministry submitted a letter to the Ministerial Council of the Economy some time ago, in order to prevent the import of the tomato crop due to its abundance locally, but until this moment no answer was received in this regard."
Al-Nayef called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani to “return the agricultural calendar of the Ministry of Agriculture, in order to prevent the import of crops available locally, in order to protect the local product and support farmers and growers, and to set customs tariffs on imported plant crops and animal products.”
And he stressed, "the importance of setting a customs tariff on crops that enter from outside Iraq, whether they are plant crops or animal products," stressing "the need for the customs tariff to be parallel to the cost of the local product, to protect the farmer and provide hard currency.”
