Today, Friday, the United Nations, through the High Commissioner for Refugees in the Middle East and North Africa, Ayman Ghariba, warned of a crisis in countries, the most important of which are Iraq and Syria, as a result of poor international funding for United Nations programs.
The UN official said in a statement, translated by (Baghdad Today), that “the preoccupation of the countries of the world with the current events in Ukraine, in addition to the high prices, the high cost of living, and the consequences of the Corona crisis, have weakened the funding allocated to the United Nations to keep refugee camps open in countries such as Iraq and Syria.”
He stressed the need to provide the necessary funds before they run out and the loss of control over those camps.
He continued by warning that “the loss of funding will lead to a humanitarian crisis, the consequences of which will spread to Europe, with weak international cooperation, which will lead to countries where refugees open the doors for their exit to Europe, which will lead to a new wave of displacement towards the continent,” as he put it.
He pointed out that “the United Nations funds many camps that house huge numbers of refugees, especially in Iraq and Syria, a large part of whom are foreigners, indicating that poor funding will lead to a breakdown in relations between the countries whose nationalities the refugees have, and the host countries, referring to the camps in Iraq and Syria.
