    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday, the head of the Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, called for a serious stand by the government and the ministries of water resources and foreign affairs regarding the drying up of the Tigris River in Maysan.
Al-Hakim said, in a statement received by (Baghdad Today), that "the scenes that were filmed and published by a number of the people of the beloved Maysan province about the drying up of the Tigris River as it passed through their cities and villages, raises our anxiety and brings us back again the fear of drought."
He added, "The issue requires a serious stand by the government and the ministries of water resources and foreign affairs to expedite the formation of a supreme committee that stands on the reality of the crisis and ways to solve it, intensify dialogue with upstream countries, and pressure towards ensuring Iraq's water share."
Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Water Resources held farmers responsible for the reduced quotas in the southern governorates, noting that this is a result of their lack of commitment to the agricultural areas established within the agricultural plan.
The ministry said, in a statement received by (Baghdad Today), that "the decrease in water quotas in some southern governorates during these days is due to the lack of water revenues received from the Mosul Dam on the Tigris and the Haditha Dam on the Euphrates from neighboring Turkey, which led to a sharp decrease in water storage." In the country, coinciding with the lack of rain and the increase in the demand for water to secure the irrigation of agricultural crops for the current winter season, which exceeded the established plan, due to the farmers’ non-compliance with the agricultural areas determined according to the agricultural plan that approved the surface water and the non-compliance with the application of the bidding system.
And she continued, "All of this led to some areas in the southern governorates being affected by the lack of water revenues. Noting that the ministry has taken measures to release quantities of storage available in the Dokan Dam to enhance the imports of the Tigris River, and signs of the increase have reached the back of the Kut Dam. The quantities of water secured in the Dukan Dam are The Tigris and Euphrates rivers cover the need and all agricultural requirements, drinking water and all other requirements, but due to the above-mentioned excesses, this led to a decrease in the rate of quantities arriving in those provinces.

And she indicated that, "Based on the directives of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Water Resources, and as a result of the continuation of these abuses, all the formations and staff of the Ministry of Water Resources have taken several measures, in coordination with the operations leaders, to remove these abuses, whether on water quotas or fish lakes exceeded, or encroachment on the agricultural areas determined according to the agricultural plan for the season." This winter, where the advanced staff in the ministry was mobilized in the work sectors spread in the affected governorates, and through the operating room formed to face water scarcity.
The ministry called on local governments to "assign the ministry's cadres to lift the excesses and demand from farmers and farmers to adhere to the water quotas established for each governorate and not to exceed the quotas of other governorates to ensure that water reaches the governorates of the tails and overcome this difficult period." The Tigris, the Upper Zab and the Lower Zab are good and will secure good quantities of water in the event of its melting and enhance water storage in our dams next spring.
And yesterday, Saturday, pictures of the Tigris River in Maysan Governorate, southern Iraq, showed that it was exposed to a "terrifying" drought, which had not been witnessed before, to the extent that citizens crossed the river on foot.
