Today, Friday, the Ministry of Water Resources revealed strategic plans to enhance groundwater, invest in dams in the field of electric power, and treat sewage in the marshes.
The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, said, in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, Tabtah, "Al-Iqtisad News", that "the current government focused in its program on basic axes, which are securing services for citizens, addressing the issue of wasting public money and fighting corruption," pointing out that "there is a group of The lagging projects have been included in the ministry's plan, including those related to the approval of the budget.
Diab added, "After approving the budget, there will be an opportunity to implement these projects, some of which are related to securing water and addressing choke points, in addition to important projects in the Diwaniyah region in the Shatra district, which is a large agricultural area."
And he added, "We have a time limit for the end of this year to complete these projects, and there are periodic follow-up reports not only by the ministry, but also by the Council of Ministers to implement the government program."
Projects awaiting budget
The Minister of Water Resources indicated that "there are 26 projects awaiting funding from the budget."
The minister stressed that "this budget is the best budget for the years after 2012."
The Prime Minister's visit to Turkey
Regarding the prime minister's visit to Turkey, Dhiab said, "It was a successful visit during which Turkey committed itself to increasing releases to the Tigris River, and through it the irrigation of the weaning of the wheat crop was secured."
He pointed out that "the Euphrates River is still suffering from a state of drought because Turkey also did not adhere to the quota established according to the protocol for the years 1987 and 1989 signed with Syria, provided that Turkey gives 500 cubic meters per second in the Tripoli area on the Turkish-Syrian border, but only 50 arrived." percent of the quantity, which greatly affected the water storage in Haditha Dam.

He pointed out that "there are many strengths that Iraq can use in dealing with Turkey, including the security aspect and the great trade exchange," noting that "there is control over the security situation from Iraq, which Turkey relies on, in addition to the development path project."
Summer plan
He pointed out that "there is a conviction that has become due to the shortage of water storage in the dams, that this year is rare due to the scarcity of water," noting that "the cultivation of rice was prevented because it consumes large amounts of water, in addition to preventing the cultivation of maize."
He stressed that "the plan focused on securing irrigation water for vegetables at a rate of one million and 100 thousand dunums, and we also allowed the cultivation of vegetables and orchards on groundwater up to one million dunums." in securing water in a sustainable manner.
And he indicated that "the ministry is trying as hard as possible to achieve the minimum limit allowed to be delivered to the marshes," pointing out that "according to the strategic study of water and land, the issue is linked to another file, which is the removal of abuses, that is, there are violations of water from the higher regions."
Cultivation of grapefruit
On the cultivation of grapefruit, the minister explained that "its cultivation was excellently successful because of the irrigation water through rain."
He added, "The ministry prepared the first and second irrigation, and after that the rains helped greatly in securing water, and the agricultural production was large, and marketing is still continuing until now by the Ministry of Commerce."
Excesses of water quotas,
he explained, "an operations room has been formed in order to remove the abuses of water quotas on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers," noting that "there are difficulties facing the ministry in the file of abuses in some areas, specifically in the Salman Pak region, and there are influential people trying as much as possible to They obstruct the process of removing the basins."
And he stressed "the importance of removing the basins, as they take up a large capacity and help the issue of evaporation during the summer, which makes there a large consumption of water, and this we cannot secure."
Buffalo breeding
Regarding buffaloes, the minister said: "The ministry has a big plan to install water desalination plants to secure them for buffalo breeders and for human uses," pointing out that "buffaloes need permanent water in the main sewage waters in the marsh areas."
He pointed out that "there are projects to treat sewage water in the marshes in order to make them more pure, and there is a successful experience in the Chibayish area with the support of international organizations, which will develop into the establishment of an environmental park that uses this water in the marshes in an area close to Chibayish. Afforestation and garden cultivation using sewage water, and we also have 9 other sites in which we will work.
Environmental pollution
With regard to environmental pollution, the minister stated that "pollution is a pressing issue for Iraq, as it occurs as a result of actions that violate scientific rules, such as direct dumping of waste into sewage water," pointing out that "there is a directive from the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Construction and Housing and to the Baghdad Municipality and local governments to take care of In this aspect, to establish sewage water purification projects, and good budget allocations have been made for them.
And he stressed that "the return water from the sewage can be used, and there is activity inside the marshes, and simple techniques will be used to treat the sewage by plants."
Dams Maintenance and Rehabilitation
Regarding dams, Dhiab mentioned that "all the dams established in Iraq have electric stations, but the drought affected them because their levels are very low, so part of them stopped due to the low levels of the dams, but there are dams in which the stations are still operating."
And he stated, "As part of the strategic study, there is a group of dams that are planned to be completed for the purposes of generating electric power, but this is controversial because the ministry is not the beneficiary of the production of this energy because energy is within the competence of the Ministry of Electricity, and we are an authority specialized in implementing dams, so there is a debate about financing."
He pointed out that "there is continuous and sustainable work to maintain the dams, especially the Mosul Dam to preserve it, as its condition is good and stable now, while the rest of the dams also have cooperation in the direction of their maintenance, especially the Dokan Dam and the Darbandikhan Dam in the region, and these dams are part of the overall system of the water system." in Iraq".
He explained, "The water harvesting dams are medium and small dams, and water harvesting is recorded in the western desert, and there are also dams for water harvesting in the eastern region, and others in the southern desert, as well as the northern desert in the Kurdistan region, and all of these will be part of a broad plan."
He pointed out that "the dams have a positive impact that serves existing communities there to secure drinking water and irrigation water in the winter season in particular, while the summer season has drinking water in the first place. This has a significant positive impact," stressing that "there is a tendency to invest any amount of water that comes from the torrents." The rain in the valleys has two purposes: the first is to benefit communities, and the second is to recharge groundwater, and this is a strategic purpose.”
