    Baghdad today - Kurdistan
Today, Monday, an official source in the Kurdistan Regional Government revealed that all attempts by the President of the region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the official of the United Nations Mission in Iraq, Jenin Blaskhart, to persuade the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq to hold elections for the Kurdistan Parliament this year have failed.
According to what the source told "Baghdad Today", Barzani and Blaskhart "tried a lot during their communication in the past days to persuade the Federal Commission to hold elections for the Kurdistan Parliament during the current year, but all attempts failed as the Commission rejected this request."
And the source confirms that Blaskhart proposed postponing the local elections for the provincial councils this year, and that elections for the regional parliament be held instead under the pretext that postponing the provincial elections does not cause any constitutional or legal vacuum, unlike the region, the absence of a parliament in it will create a legal and constitutional vacuum in it. .
He explained, "The Electoral Commission rejected Plaskhat's proposal by emphasizing the need to hold local elections this year without delaying them, in addition to the difficulty of holding the Kurdistan Parliament elections this year."
And the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, had signed an executive order on February 24, 2022, stipulating that October 1 of last year be set as the date for the elections for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament, but it was postponed after the region’s parliament voted in October. In the past, he extended his legislative life and postponed the elections for only one year.
The regional presidency set another date for holding elections on November 18, 2023; After negotiations sponsored by the United Nations Mission in Baghdad and Erbil.
The region has held 5 parliamentary elections so far, the first in 1992 and the last in 2018.
Regarding the position of the Federal Commission on supervising the Kurdistan elections or holding them together with the local provincial council elections at the end of this year, the Commission confirmed that holding the region's elections with the provincial council elections is "not technically possible."
