    Economy News _ Baghdad
Today, Monday, the Ministry of Planning counted the number of informal settlements throughout Iraq, and while it showed that Baghdad ranks first in slums and Najaf the least, it referred to a road map with the United Nations to address and settle random housing.
The ministry's spokesman, Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi, said in an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, followed by "Al-Iqtisad News", that "the file of slums is one of the complex files, and according to the survey and updating of data on slums of the Ministry of Planning during the recent period, the number of slums reached more than 4,600 slum complexes." All over Iraq, including 1093 random complexes in the capital, Baghdad, followed by Basra Governorate, with more than 700 random complexes,” noting that “Al-Najaf Governorate recorded the lowest number of slums, with only 98 random complexes, while there are 121 random complexes in Al-Muthanna Governorate.”
Al-Hindawi added, "The number of citizens who live in slums reaches 3 million and 600 thousand people, and this number represents about 10 percent of the population of Iraq," stressing that "the goal of the data on slums comes in order to develop solutions and treatments, and there is a road map prepared in cooperation With the United Nations program, aiming to address and settle slums in Iraq.
He pointed out that "the slums bill had its first reading in the House of Representatives, but it was returned to the government for reconsideration," noting "the government's approach to open broad horizons for the housing sector through new residential cities that will be established in a number of governorates."
He stressed that "5 residential cities will be established as a first stage, which will represent an important addition, and poor families will have a share in these residential communities," pointing to "the government's approach to addressing random housing by building residential complexes, rehabilitating some random complexes, and transforming the gender of the land for these random communities."
Al-Hindawi indicated that "83 to 87 percent of the informal settlements were established on state-owned lands, compared to 13 percent of the slums that were established on privately owned lands."
