Baghdad: Al-Sabah
The Ministry of Planning stated that conducting the upcoming general population census will provide real numbers, population growth indicators, age groups, and other very important indicators that will help decision-makers and contribute to drawing up policies and long-term development plans.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The population census will give very accurate numbers about the size of the population in Iraq, as age groups of the population and the proportions of these groups, and it will give other very important indicators about health, educational and service characteristics.” For the population,” indicating that “these details will paint for us a comprehensive picture of the reality of life in Iraq, and will contribute to drawing up a policy plan and long-term development plans.”
He added, "Every population increase must be matched by service policies that provide the services required for the population, as well as other policies that can absorb these population increases and turn them into effective development engines," explaining that "in this context and within the long-term population policies, there are important paths that come in... The forefront of which is combating poverty and hunger, within the goals of sustainable development, as well as improving the level of education, health and housing, and providing job opportunities for young people, whose area will be the largest within the population segments.” He explained that “these policies are the ones that can absorb population increases and turn them into a positive factor, especially since “Iraq will enter the stage of the ‘demographic boom’ in which economically active citizens (age 15 to 63 years) will constitute more than 60% of the segments of the population.”
He explained, “The estimates of the Ministry of Planning, according to statistical data, indicated that the population of Iraq has reached 41 million people, and we expect the population to reach 42 million and perhaps more, while maintaining the qualitative ratios as a balance and convergence between the number of women and men,” indicating that “ The capital, Baghdad, represents the largest population with less than 9 million people, followed by Nineveh Governorate with more than 4 million people and Basra with more than 3 million. Then come other governorates that occupy fourth place (Dhi Qar, Babil, and Sulaymaniyah), and come in succession with less than two million people (Anbar and Karbala). The lowest percentage of population is Al-Muthanna Governorate, with 950 thousand people.Al-Hindawi pointed out that “the Ministry of Planning has diagnosed the development gaps in various fields in order to develop solutions and treatments,” indicating that “these gaps are represented in the health, educational, economic, services, electricity, and water aspects, and these development gaps were identified based on statistical data and accurate reports, and in accordance with the definition of These gaps are being worked on to develop development policies in various sectors, to provide better lives and services for citizens, taking into account population increases.”He stated, “On the other hand, with regard to sustainable development and planning, and in partnership with other state institutions, and in cooperation with international organizations, we are working in full swing to move forward with achieving the 17 sustainable development goals, most notably combating poverty and hunger, supporting health and education, and paying attention to vulnerable groups, people with special needs, and the elderly.” age and children, achieving real partnerships between the public and private sectors, striving to achieve equality between men and women, and creating job opportunities for youth,” stressing that “all of these goals are within Iraq’s vision for sustainable development (2020-2030), in addition to Iraq’s detailed sectoral plans and the five-year development plan.” And the strategy to reduce poverty in Iraq.
