The authorities in Iraq intend to establish a group of new dams to benefit from rainwater, in light of the danger of drought threatening the Tigris and Euphrates rivers due to the lack of water releases and climate change factors.
The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, said yesterday, Sunday, that the ministry intends to build 36 dams to harvest water during the next year, after studies and designs are completed, so that these dams to be built will be distributed among several regions of the country, to benefit from rainwater and store it during the summer.
Aoun explained - in a statement to the official Iraqi daily Al-Sabah - that after 4 years of drought, Iraq will witness early rainfall during the upcoming fall and winter seasons, which will help secure good water reserves for the country for drinking and agriculture, instead of what has been depleted.
The Minister of Water Resources confirmed that the start of the plan will be the implementation of two dams, the first the Abu Takiya Dam near the Sinjar and Rabia regions within the northern desert, and the second the Al-Masad Dam in the Western Desert.
The Iraqi efforts to increase the construction of dams to benefit from storing rainwater come to confront the drought crisis that has been hitting Mesopotamia for years, as a result of the decline in imports from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and the rivers coming from “Turkey and Iran.”
Video clips of the Tigris River drying up earlier sparked popular concern in Iraq, and increased fears of the aggravation of the specter of drought, amid calls for the Iraqi government to take action to address this issue, or to internationalize it.
The drought crisis there also cast a shadow over the reality of agriculture and fisheries, and harmed the livelihoods of farmers, in addition to the material losses to the state, which was benefiting through the production of those sectors dependent on water and agricultural sources.
