Baghdad: Muhannad Abdul Wahab
While the countdown to December 18, the date of holding the anticipated provincial council elections, has begun, conversations are circulating in the streets, among citizens, and among politicians about boycotting the elections as well as participating in them, as well as their feasibility and expected impact on the Iraqi reality, or whether the situation will remain as it is. The political analyst
, Muhammad Salah told “Al-Sabah”: “There is a division in the Iraqi street between supporters of the elections and opponents. As for the supporting side, it is the one that wants there to be a change in reality and in the street in terms of providing services and what the citizen needs in terms of life requirements and helping him to implement the services he needs.” And establishing infrastructure.
He added, “The supporting party indicates that the elections will have a realistic and strong impact in changing the old faces. As for the opposing party, it does not recognize the constitutionality of these elections or the existing candidates, and it itself believes that the provincial councils are (an extra ring) and that the elections that “It will take place on December 18th and will not provide the citizen with anything or change the environmental reality
and the services available on the street.”
He explained, “These beliefs between the two parties will generate many forms of division in the street and in the selection of candidates,” and he continued, “The Iraqi street needs many services provided to the citizen, and these councils will be the active hand in implementing what they want in terms of future plans and services.
” “.
For his part, political analyst, Mujasha Al-Tamimi, said that there are doubts looming over whether or not the elections will be held.
Al-Tamimi said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The first and most dangerous doubts about holding the elections are the renewal of military operations and battles in Gaza, and the accompanying direct threat from (the Islamic resistance factions in Iraq), which directly announced that they (will not leave their people in this crisis).” “The war is facing the tyrants of the world alone,” according to the factions’ statement, “and fears that the tense situation in Iraq is about to escalate, and this is what will cause an Iraqi-American crisis, as the Iraqi government will be in great embarrassment in this regard.”
He added, “In internal affairs, Diyala Governorate has witnessed a serious security deterioration recently, as this situation will have a direct negative impact on the security situation in the governorate, which will reflect negatively on the atmosphere of the elections, in addition to the dominance of an atmosphere of suspicion and apprehension over the western governorates following the exemption crisis.” Former Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi, and the inability of the Sunni forces to reach an alternative, especially with the development of (Sunni-Sunni) and Shiite disputes over the names nominated to succeed Al-Halbousi.”
Al-Tamimi pointed out, “The most dangerous challenge is to boycott Mr. Muqtada al-Sadr, who urged his followers and all his fans not to participate in the elections, which will cause weak electoral participation due to the size of the Sadrist mass base within the Shiite arena.”
He continued: “In Kirkuk, the crisis could be more complicated after some Arab and Turkmen figures questioned fraud and irregularities in the results of the provincial council polls in Kirkuk, despite the fact that the High Elections Commission stressed the integrity of the voter registry and the absence of any legal justification for postponing the elections in the province.
” “.
He concluded by saying: “These points are the most prominent political reasons facing the elections, but there are other technical reasons related to the High Elections Commission not distributing biometric electoral cards to those allowed to vote.”
