    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (January 4, 2024), the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee confirmed that the drought crisis in Iraq is continuing and worsening without any quick solutions, while indicating that this is contradictory to the “reassuring” indicators that the Ministry of Water Resources is talking about .
Committee member Thaer al-Jubouri said, in an interview with “Baghdad Today,” that “the drought crisis in Iraq still poses a real danger and threat, and this crisis is worsening day after day without there being quick solutions to this crisis, especially since this crisis will be highly dangerous next summer.” .
Al-Jubouri stressed that "the Iraqi government is required to move quickly towards the Turkish side to ensure that Iraq obtains its fair water share. Otherwise, the government must move with legal frameworks to ensure this matter. We cannot remain silent for a long time regarding this crisis, which has serious repercussions at various levels."
In contrast, the Ministry of Water Resources believes that the current season is better than previous drought years, as Resources Minister Aoun Diab says, “The floods that occurred in the northern region were more than their usual annual rates,” considering that “the current winter season is better than It was preceded due to the intensity of snowfall and heavy rain in the northern regions, especially within the Tigris and Euphrates basins in Turkey, which is a positive indicator of its availability of quantities for storage within the lakes of the Mosul, Dokan and Darbandikhan dams,” according to the official Al-Sabah newspaper .
Abdullah pointed out that the level of the Tigris River will rise by two metres, which will bring great benefit to the central and southern regions of the country, including the marshes, noting that “water supplies in the Mosul Dam are currently better than before due to lower temperatures, which prevents evaporation, and releases to the Tigris River from Alisu Dam, doubled from 300 m3/s in 2023, to 500 m3/s, but releases to the Euphrates River currently are not at the required level.”
