The Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibas Al-Saadawi, said, “The Ministry has prepared a plan to open several public transport lines,” noting that “the lines will be opened in the capital, Baghdad, in cooperation between the General Company for Passenger Transport, the Prime Minister’s Office, General Traffic, the Baghdad Municipality, and the Baghdad Governorate.”

He stressed that "the Ministry is determined to restore all public transport lines and open all 72 mass transport lines in Baghdad," according to a statement by the official agency.

Al-Sumaria News conducted a review of government statistics, and it became clear that Iraq has more than 1,200 public transport buses, but only 644 of them are in operation, which means that 47% of them are stopped, according to the latest government statistics for the year 2022, while the number of seats or capacity of all buses is more than 68 thousand people.

The number of passengers, delegations and bus passengers in 2022 reached only 6 million people.

In Baghdad alone, the number of buses operating reached more than 220 buses, which provides more than 20,000 seats, while the number of lines operating in 2022 reached 33 lines, while the Ministry of Transport intends to activate the remaining 40 lines.

The number of passengers traveling by buses within Baghdad reached more than 4 million people in 2022, and this number travels within Baghdad in one day on private wheels.

While the General Traffic Directorate estimates that the number of vehicles in Baghdad that travel in the streets exceeds 3 million, this means that at least 3 million people move around in Baghdad at one time during the day or while going to official work in the morning or when leaving. On the other hand, the carrying capacity is For buses inside Baghdad, according to the aforementioned numbers, there are more than 35 thousand seats only inside Baghdad, which means that the available buses, even if they are completely restarted, will be able to transport only 1% of the total Iraqis who travel in Baghdad at one time.
