The Ministry of Oil revealed its endeavor to strengthen the fleet of oil tankers with a new number after two Norwegian tankers entered commercial operations, and to contract with international companies to enhance the work of the National Tanker Company, according to the Specialized Energy Platform.

Ministry of Oil spokesman Assem Jihad said that the ministry seeks to strengthen the national fleet or carrier with a number of tankers, and recently two tankers entered commercial work, implemented by the Norwegian company, which is one of the companies specialized in this field.

In 2020, the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company had concluded a contract with a Norwegian company to build two tankers each with a capacity of 31,000 tons (220,000 barrels), namely Sumer and Akkad, to enhance the company’s fleet in transporting crude oil and petroleum derivatives in addition to the activity of the current tankers, namely Baghdad. Shatt al-Arab, Tigris and Euphrates.

    Contracting with international companies
Jihad confirmed that the ministry’s plans will not stop there, but rather seeks to strengthen contracts with reputable international companies to enhance the work of the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company, which is the national carrier of crude oil and its products.

He pointed out that Iraq's main export ports are the southern ports represented by the port of Basra, the single buoys, and the port of Al-Amaya, in addition to the northern port, which is the Turkish port of Ceyhan, noting that "the greatest weight is the southern port, which occupies most of the oil exports."

Assem Jihad stressed that the Ministry of Oil is keen to develop the maritime transport sector as it is one of the important joints in the process of marketing Iraqi oil and one of the important pillars of the movement of transporting crude oil and fuel to global markets.

    Iraqi Oil Tankers
The government established the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company in 1972, with the aim of increasing the country's revenues from oil exports, and thus supporting its economy.

The Director General of the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company, Ali Qais Abdul Jabbar, had recently confirmed in statements that his company, in cooperation with the Ministry of Oil, had developed a plan to build tankers and expand the oil tanker fleet.

The company owns about 20 oil tankers with different tonnages, the most prominent of which are: Rumaila, Kirkuk, Ain Zala, Khanaqin, Jambur, Baba Karkar, Bazkan, Tariq bin Ziyad, Al-Mutanabbi, Al-Qadisiyah, Yarmouk, Al-Farahidi, Amoria, Hattin, Al-Mustansiriya, Al-Khaleda, Al-Karama, and Sumer. And he confirmed.

Iraq also owns 4 tankers with tonnages ranging between 10,000 and 13,000 tons: Baghdad, Tigris, Shatt al-Arab, and Euphrates, according to the specialized energy platform.

Ali Qais Abdul Jabbar pointed out that there is a plan in place to build two modern tankers with international specifications, and it will be approved soon, as part of the efforts aimed at owning a group of modern giant tankers to transport Iraqi crude oil, as well as cooperation between the Oil Tanker Company and the Oil Marketing Company “SOMO.” To buy carriers and enter into participation with them.

Abdul-Jabbar explained, “By owning a tanker fleet of at least two crude oil tankers in each project, and ensuring the return of the Iraqi crude oil fleet, self-reliance is achieved without the need for partnerships, and the Oil Tanker Company returns to practicing its main activity of transporting Iraqi crude oil to buyers from various countries of the world.”
