The American newspaper “Politico” reported that the Iraqi embassy in Washington reached an agreement with the legal consulting and legal firm “Squire Patton Boggs” to assist it with lobbying activity inside the United States, and it also strengthened its contract with another company.
According to the newspaper’s report, this comes in light of increasing tensions in the Middle East due to the war between Israel and Hamas and the recent American military campaign that came in response to an attack that killed 3 American soldiers.
The American report indicated that the Iraqi embassy signed a one-year contract with “Squire Patton Boggs” worth about $800,000, with the aim of “providing political advice and communication regarding bilateral political and commercial relations” between the two countries.
“Politico” based its report on the data of a copy of the contract deposited with the US Department of Justice, which is a contract dated February 2, which means that it was signed before an American drone strike in Baghdad that led to the killing of the commander of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, (Abu Baqir Al-Saadi), who the Pentagon confirms was responsible for attacks on Americans in the region.
The report pointed out that the American raid sparked a reaction from Iraqi leaders, as a spokesman for the Iraqi Prime Minister warned that the raid would increase pressure to expel the US-led coalition forces.
The report indicated that administrative officials, Ed Newberry and Jason Palul, and former diplomat Paul Jones, David Schnittger, and Brett Boyles, are the ones who will manage the activities related to this contract, according to what the Ministry of Justice documents show.
At the same time, the report stated that in recent weeks the Iraqi embassy also sought help from Michael Sarava, an attorney at the Butzel Long Law Firm in Michigan, in order to help Iraq establish relations with the Iraqi-American communities in Michigan and Illinois, in addition to the Iraqi business community. Americans and members of Congress who represent these communities. The report continued that the Iraqi embassy renewed its contract with the lobby and communications company “Cogent Strategies” with the aim of leading and monitoring media coverage, conducting media training for the embassy and the ambassador, and enhancing the embassy’s presence on social media, in addition to communicating with research institutes.
The report added that as part of extending this contract for one year, the fees that Cogent will charge will increase from $200,000 to $310,000.
