    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Economist Nabil Al-Marsoumi confirmed today, Saturday (February 24, 2024), that the opening of the northern refineries will strengthen the oil refining industry in Iraq.
Al-Marsoumi said in a clarification received by “Baghdad Today” that, “Although Iraq is one of the largest producers of crude oil in the world (more than 4 million per day), it suffers from a deficit in oil derivatives that drains about 5 billion dollars from the country’s resources to meet its needs.” The local market through import.
He added, "This matter recently prompted the government to launch a plan to increase the capacity of oil refineries in Iraq, with the aim of stopping importing fuel and achieving near self-sufficiency in oil products by 2025, and then shifting to exporting abroad by raising the refining capacity of the Northern Refineries Company from 210." Thousands of barrels per day, including the capacity of the refineries (Kirkuk, Qayyarah, Al-Siniya, Haditha, Al-Kasak, Salah al-Din 1 and 2 refineries, up to 500 thousand barrels per day, with support from the reconstruction of the North Refinery, with a capacity of 150 thousand barrels per day, including 3 million liters of gasoline per day, and the expansion of the Diwaniyah refinery by adding A new refining unit with a capacity of 70,000 barrels per day, raising its total production to 90,000 barrels per day, with investments of $125 million.
He continued, "The Northern Refineries will also work to increase the total production capacity of the Southern Refineries Company to about 280,000 barrels per day, by developing and adding new units to its oil refineries."
Al-Marsoumi pointed out, “There is another factor that could give Iraq greater scope to increase production, which is that the Karbala refinery began operating in 2023 as it is the most advanced refinery in Iraq. The Karbala refinery will be able to process 140 thousand barrels per day of heavy and lighter crude oil to produce The so-called "white products".
He stated, "Iraq's imports of gasoline and kerosene will be reduced, and if the Karbala refinery succeeds in producing 9 million barrels per day of gasoline, the total production of the refineries will rise after the opening of the North Refinery to 27 million liters per day, which covers 90% of local consumption of gasoline, that is, Iraq will then need to import only 3 million liters per day of gasoline, which currently constitutes three-quarters of imported petroleum derivatives.”
Yesterday, Friday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani opened the Al-Shamal Refinery in Baiji District, Salah al-Din Governorate.
Al-Sudani's media office said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani opened the Al-Shamal refinery in Baiji after its rehabilitation, and it stopped for more than 10 years."
On (August 15, 2023), Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani announced that work would continue throughout the day on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North Refinery in the Al-Samoud complex in Baiji, with a capacity of 150 thousand barrels per day, and it is planned to be completed by the end of 2024.
