The Independent High Electoral Commission announced the registration of 10 parties and two alliances to run in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections scheduled for next June 10. The Kurdistan Democratic Party will be absent from the upcoming elections, and its leaders have questioned their constitutionality and legitimacy and suggested they be postponed.
The spokesperson for the Independent High Electoral Commission, Jumana Al-Ghalai, said yesterday, Monday: “The stage of submitting lists of candidates for alliances, political parties, and nominated individuals has ended, which resulted in two alliances, 10 parties that submitted lists of candidates, and 54 individual candidates.”
Al-Ghalai noted that “the Kurdistan Democratic Party did not submit a list of its candidates to participate in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections,” and added, “the process of drawing candidate numbers will take place on the 6th of April, according to the operational schedule and timings,” and stressed that “the Commission is continuing its work, and is committed to the timings.” Timetable for holding the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections.
She pointed out that "the Commission works with complete transparency, impartiality and integrity, and stands at the same distance from all those wishing to participate, including coalitions, parties and individual candidates."
Yesterday, Sunday, the Independent High Electoral Commission extended the deadline for submitting candidates for the Kurdistan Parliament elections to 12 midnight.
In addition, the Kurdistan Democratic Party responded to the votes that indicated its lack of seriousness in boycotting the regional parliament elections. Party member Rebin Salam said: “Some were saying that the Democratic Party does not have the seriousness to boycott the elections and wants to put pressure to achieve political gains, but it has proven the opposite.”
He stressed that "the party did not participate and register due to the failure to implement its conditions that it put forward in the withdrawal statement," indicating that "the political blocs still insist on erasing the constitutional identity of the region's entity, and this is what we categorically reject," as he put it.
He pointed out that “the elections are about to be postponed and elections cannot be held in Kurdistan in the absence of someone who represents 60% of the voters’ votes,” noting that “the Democratic Party differs from the Sadrist bloc, as the latter withdrew after the elections, but we boycotted before the elections, and hence the results of participation.” “It will be extremely low,” he said.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party had previously announced, "not to participate in the elections for the Kurdistan region, scheduled for next June 10."
The party justified its decision by saying that it did not want to “legitimize an unconstitutional and undemocratic election,” criticizing what it called all the “constitutional violations” practiced by the Federal Court against the Kurdistan region and its constitutional institutions in general, as the Democrat put it.
The party criticized the amendments that it described as "unconstitutional" to the election law for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament, and also threatened to withdraw from the political process unless the constitution is "implemented," according to the Kurdistan Democratic Party's statement.
While member of the Kurdistan Justice Party, Rebwar Muhammad Amin, considered that the Democratic Party aims, through its withdrawal, to "tickle the feelings of citizens."
Amin said in a previous statement: “The Democrat’s withdrawal and the statement he issued amounted to a challenge to the decision of the judiciary and the highest authority, which is the Federal Court, and this is a dangerous matter,” as he put it.
He added, "The Democrat realizes that holding elections at the present time is not in his interest, because of the citizens' hatred of the parties of power, because of their great corruption, so he is trying to tickle the feelings of the citizens, with slogans of the oppression of the Kurds, and the issue of the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan region, in an attempt to win the feelings of the citizen, or influence the The Federal Court’s decisions are coming,” the Kurdish politician said.
