Shafaq News/ The leader of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and the world, Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako, announced on Thursday his return to his headquarters in the capital, Baghdad, at the personal invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani.
The church said in a statement, received by Shafaq News Agency, that, “At the personal invitation of the Prime Minister of Iraq, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, His Beatitude Patriarch Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako arrived (yesterday evening, Wednesday), accompanied by Bishop Thomas Meram, to Baghdad.”
The statement added, "A representative of the Prime Minister (Hazem Watan) received Sako at Baghdad International Airport and the Hall of Honor, and then headed to his headquarters in the Patriarchal edifice in Mansour, accompanied by the Chaldean Church prayer."

Sako's return to Baghdad comes days before the start of a scheduled visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani to Washington at the invitation of US President Joe Biden.
Earlier, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed the United States' concern about the decision issued by Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid to withdraw the Republican decree appointing Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and the world.
The American spokesman considered the Iraqi presidential decision “a blow to religious freedom, and that is why we are very concerned, and we engaged directly with the Iraqi government to clarify our concerns,” as he put it.

The Chaldean Catholic Patriarch in Iraq, Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, decided to withdraw from the Patriarchal headquarters in Baghdad and go to a monastery in the city of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region, in a new chapter of tension between him, on the one hand, and the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid, and the leader of the Christian “Babylon” movement, Rayan Al-Kildani, on the one hand. Other.
In mid-July 2023, Sako announced his withdrawal from the Patriarchal headquarters in Baghdad to a monastery in the Kurdistan Region, denouncing a “campaign” launched against him by the “Babylon” movement and the “silence of the government,” as he put it.
At the time, Sako also denounced what he considered a “dirty game.” He suggested to what he described as “the protector of the constitution” - in reference to the President of the Republic - that Al-Kaldani and his two brothers be put in charge of “the church’s endowments.”
The head of the Babylon Movement, Rayan Al-Kildani, responded to this decision in a statement published on his Twitter account, saying, “We reject what was stated in the letter, and we are a political movement, not battalions, and we are part of the state administration coalition, and we confirm that the decision to withdraw the decree from it is the decision of the Presidency of the Republic.” "And not Babylon."
