Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Muhammad Jassim Al-Khafaji, announced that the next parliamentary elections will be held in November 2025, meaning there is only a year and a half remaining.
Al-Khafaji said in a press statement followed by Al-Masala, that despite the presence of political and non-political movements, holding early elections is almost impossible, especially with the presence of matters governing the electoral process, including that the current commission will end its work next July, a month after the region’s elections end, and thus we will be faced with choosing a commission. The process of selecting a new commission is not an easy matter that involves political and other tensions.
He stated that if the Election Commission is chosen in light of the current law, it requires time and a change in its form. In both cases, the matter is difficult with the current law in place, noting that the current Commission conducted approximately three to four elections.
He pointed out that from a political standpoint, the government is moving towards implementing its electoral program and there is no justification for holding early elections. However, the elections will take place in November of next year, meaning there is only a year and a half remaining. He stressed that Parliament will seek to approve a new law for the commission, but it may It is governed by political orientations and the agreement is with the same law as the Commission and its administrative formations, but only the election of new judges.
He added that currently, politically, technically and legally, holding early elections is out of the question. The closest approach may be to amending the Commission law by increasing the number of commissioners or replacing judges with technical or administrative employees, explaining that talking about early elections is unacceptable because it raises many questions: Is there a failure in the work of Parliament? Or the government's performance
