Environment: Legal landfill sites do not exceed 28%

The Ministry of Environment revealed that the percentage of landfill sites that have received approval does not exceed 28 percent, while it praised projects to generate electrical energy from waste.
The director of the Department of Chemicals and Polluted Site Evaluation in the Ministry, Louay Sadiq Al-Mukhtar, said in an interview with Al-Sabah: “Projects for generating electrical energy from waste are promising projects used by many developed countries, especially those where the cost of energy generated from fossil fuels is high.” “High.” He added, “There is support for these projects in view of the measures the world requires in confronting the problem of climate change and reducing the severity of greenhouse emissions, which require concerted efforts.” Al-Mukhtar stated, “Municipal waste management in Iraq lacks many components and results in Many acute and severe pollutants resulting from their accidental or irregular burning, which generates the emission of many toxic gases, some of which are carcinogenic, in open spaces.”
He continued, “Landfill sites lack the elements of sound and integrated environmental management and are not typical, in addition to the fact that the percentage of them that have received approval does not exceed more than 28 percent, and the costs of managing this waste through proper and safe collection, sorting, and other operations until landfilling requires large areas.” And it costs a lot of money.”
He explained that "the use of waste in regular incinerators must be with certain specifications and conditions, noting the necessity of providing incinerators whose temperature reaches 1100-1200 degrees, accompanied by burning of the emitted gases, as well as control units for the solid and liquid waste generated from them."
Al-Mukhtar stressed, "There are many advantages to typical incinerators, and we must take into account the economic feasibility in such projects, as there is a comparison between the economic and environmental feasibility to balance the two in terms of costs."
