    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Iraqi military expert Abdul Karim Khalaf described Turkey on Tuesday (July 9, 2024) as “using the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as a pretext” in its incursion and bombing of areas and villages in the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, noting that the main goal is to seize Mosul.
Abdul Karim Khalaf told Baghdad Today, "Some of the areas that the Turkish forces entered have nothing to do with what they are marketing regarding combating the PKK, and the matter gives indications that what is happening is not as it is and that Turkey's intentions are not clear and have nothing to do with eliminating the PKK," noting that "there was a military encirclement of the city of Mosul and it says that it has no ambitions for Iraqi territory, but there is no justification for the presence of its forces in Bashiqa and it is far removed from the activities of the PKK."
He added, "It is clear that the recent Turkish reinforcements last month entered with a heavy force of tanks, which are not operating in areas where the PKK is active. However, despite this, the Turks established military points with approximately 300-400 tanks in areas where there are no PKK activities, as Turkey claims."
Khalaf stressed, "We must raise question marks to know the exact intentions of the Turks. The issue of the Workers' Party is an internal Turkish issue and they must hold talks with them. However, settling it on Iraqi territory will not lead to results, especially since there is activity by the Workers' Party in Syria and there is support for them from the SDF. So what will Turkey do? These matters cannot be dealt with in this way. Turkey's intentions raise doubts and we must know what Turkey wants from northern Iraq."
It is noteworthy that the past few days have witnessed the deployment of the Turkish army in the areas of Amadiyah district in the city of Dohuk, and the deployment of checkpoints, with the continuation of intermittent aerial bombardment in mountainous areas in northern Iraq.
Earlier, the Prime Minister's advisor Ibrahim Al-Sumaidaie stated in an interview with a local channel that the Turkish military operations in the border areas of the Kurdistan Region against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are being carried out in coordination between Baghdad and Ankara.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani discussed with the new Turkish Ambassador to Baghdad, Anil Bora Inan, joint security coordination procedures in the border areas, in a way that confirms Iraq's sovereignty over its lands and prevents any violations.
The Minister of Interior in the Kurdistan Region, Reber Ahmed, said, "The presence of the Workers' Party is illegal and the Iraqi government has also decided to ban the Workers' Party, and we all believe that the Workers' Party must leave these areas in order not to harm their residents."
He added, "We and Baghdad are in contact with Turkey on the issue of military intervention, but the problem is that the pretext for any intervention in Iraqi territory is the presence of the Workers' Party on these borders, as the presence of the Workers' Party provides justification for carrying out such activities in these areas."
