Official consensus to support women with government legislation and plans

Official leaders stressed the need to work to support women in terms of effective government legislation and plans, and to contribute to educating about the importance of their role and societal rights in a way that improves Iraq’s image before the world.
President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid said in a speech yesterday, Saturday, during the Islamic Day Conference to Combat Violence Against Women, that there is “an urgent need for a lot of work and education about the importance of appreciating the role of women in society.”
Rashid pointed out that “our contemporary history preserves many of the great roles played by Iraqi women against dictatorship and tyranny and their contributions to the revolutions that took place against despotic regimes, and they played a major role in the mountains and marshes.”
Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani said during the conference: “Our society, in all its categories, does not approve of or support any form of violence against women,” indicating that “the government supported the 16-day campaign to combat violence against women.”
He pointed out that “our government includes in its institutions many female leaders, with 3 female ministers, 2 women with the rank of undersecretary, 111 women with the rank of general director, and 47 female assistant general directors,” explaining that “soon the council will discuss in a specialized workshop all the observations raised regarding the Personal Status Law.”
The head of the Judicial Council, Faeq Zidane, pointed out during the sixth edition of the conference, which is organized by the Al-Hakim Foundation under the patronage of Mr. Ammar Al-Hakim, that “violence against women is a fundamental issue that affects human dignity and basic rights and poses a major challenge to justice and equality in our societies,” stressing “the judiciary’s commitment to standing firmly against all forms of violence.”
Acting Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, said: “Lady Zainab (peace be upon her) has established the status and leadership, humanitarian and legal role of women in Islam,” stressing “the support of the House of Representatives for women’s empowerment issues and the enactment of legislation that guarantees the preservation of their status and rights.”
The Deputy Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Claudio Cordone, said: “The Supreme Council for Women is communicating positively with the Parliamentary Committee for Women, Family and Childhood, and I call on Iraqi leaders to ensure that any proposed project protects the rights of women and children in line with Iraq’s human rights obligations.”
Cordone urged the parliament to “adopt a law against domestic violence and establish shelters for abused women.”
For his part, the head of the National State Forces Alliance, Mr. Ammar al-Hakim, called during the conference to “follow up on the outcomes and recommendations of the conferences on women,” calling for “detailing them between what is a legislative duty and an executive duty.”
Al-Hakim also called for “granting female survivors of ISIS their legal rights and compensating them for the violations of rights and dignity they were subjected to, and the need to provide a social environment for the return of the displaced and to end the displacement file completely.”
