Integrity judge’s statements create political tension, parliament’s stance unclear on “emergency session”

After the head of the Integrity Commission, Haider Hanoun, requested holding a public parliamentary session regarding the accusations he made against the Integrity Judge, Diaa Jaafar, the possibility of holding the session is still unknown.
According to member of the House of Representatives, Raed Al-Maliki, the presidency has not yet responded regarding setting a session to host the judge of the Karkh Investigation Court specializing in integrity cases, Diaa Jaafar, and the head of the Integrity Commission, Judge Haider Hanoun, based on the latter’s request.
Al-Maliki said, “A number of representatives requested hosting the two judges to stand on the allegations of the head of the Integrity Commission, Judge Haider Hanoun, during the press conference he held yesterday in Erbil.”
He added, “The request was submitted to the presidency of the council, but it did not respond regarding holding an emergency session to host them and stand on the truth of what was mentioned.”
Meanwhile, member of the House of Representatives, Taher Al-Battat, ruled out holding an emergency session to host the head of the Integrity Commission, Judge Haider Hanoun, and Judge Diaa Jaafar, based on the former’s request.
Al-Batat said, “70 members of parliament signed an emergency session to host the two judges to hear from them about what the head of the Integrity Commission, Haider Hanoun, said, in which he indicated that the Integrity Commission is weak and that Judge Diaa Jaafar should not use his authority against us.”
Al-Batat pointed out that “after the representatives collected the signatures, the parliament session was adjourned until further notice, and most of them went to their governorates to follow up on the status of services and fulfill the demands of their constituents.”
Hanoun had hinted that “the case of the theft of Nour Zuhair in Basra was transferred to Baghdad to Judge Diaa Jaafar and disappeared.”
Hanoun said in a press conference that “we have information that Judge Diaa Jaafar received a plot of land as a soldier,” noting that “Al-Kadhimi granted plots of land, one of which was to Judge Diaa Jaafar, with the aim of buying loyalties.”
Hanoun pointed out that “18 billion dollars were wasted in the railway case, as “Iraq’s railways were sold entirely in this case, and yet it has not been considered by Judge Diaa Jaafar for two months.”
“We don’t know if it belongs to Nour Zuhair, it was sold entirely, and that costs Iraq an estimated $18 billion,” he said, adding, “There are those who want to return Iraq to the era of chariots.” Hanoun
asked the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zidane, to support his demand to attend parliament and hold a public session with Judge Diaa Jaafar.
Hanoun hinted that “Nour Zuhair’s case in Basra was transferred to Baghdad to Judge Diaa Jaafar and disappeared.”
He pointed out that “Judge Diaa Jaafar is detaining employees in Maysan with the aim of tarnishing my reputation,” saying, “It is better for us to be imprisoned with honor without covering up for those accused in the theft of the century case.”
Earlier, audio leaks spread indicating that “Haider Hanoun and his employees were involved in pressuring employees of the real estate registration and tax departments, and threatening to open money laundering files against those who refuse to help them seize plots of land in Amara.”
Hanoun announced “the beginning of the real corruption battle starting today (yesterday),” stressing that “I only own two plots of land in Maysan Governorate, and what was circulated is incorrect,” calling on the Iraqi parliament to host him to investigate the matter.
In his conference, Hanoun referred to many corruption cases in which integrity has been achieved, including the theft of tax deposits, “the theft of the century.”
He said that “the accused Nour Zuhair forged 114 financial instruments and must be punished with 114 sentences,” noting that Zuhair “is accused of crimes other than the theft of tax deposits, and stole 720 dunums in the Shatt al-Arab.”
He provided further details about the tax deposits case, saying that there are people who have been imprisoned for two years without being referred to trial, and “we have 30 defendants in the case and we do not know which direction they will go.” The
head of the Integrity Commission held the Iraqi Parliament responsible for “proving the Integrity Commission’s courtesy and submission to the corrupt, or confirming the opposite. As well as accountability for these files and the lost funds, where they went, and this is the work of Parliament.”
