Tomato price increase defies Iraqi self-sufficiency

Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink: Iraqi agriculture ministry attributed the increase of tomato prices to the end of its cultivation season, pointing that it will give permissions to import tomato from abroad.
Social media activists called to boycott buying tomato for three days to press the government to interfere to reduce tomato prices.
The increase in tomato prices had no precedent in Iraq and the ministry has no authority to interfere in determining prices.
It is not expected that the prices of the tomato will be highly reduced with the coming imports, because the custom tariffs will have additional weight in determining future prices.
Most of the tomato are imported from Syria and Turkey.
