Israeli army radio reported that police commander Major General Roni al-Sheikh abruptly fired his assistant Aryeh Amit on Friday.
The radio added that this decision came against the background of the ongoing tension in the city of Jerusalem, which has been witnessing two weeks ago violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces because of the recent actions in the Haram al-Sharif.
The clashes resumed today after Friday prayers in Jerusalem and the cities of the West Bank and escalated against the backdrop of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to impose restrictions on prayer at the Haram al-Sharif, including allowing only women and men over the age of 50 to enter.
The Israeli Channel 2 announced that the local authorities deployed 3000 policemen, erected dozens of checkpoints, and raised the state of alert before Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
