The meeting between Saudi King Abdullah II and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on the fifth of this month marked a major shift in the Saudi stance towards the Syrian issue, according to the French intelligence daily Intelligence Online.

Riyadh has confirmed that it will not oppose Bashar al-Asad's remaining in power as president of Syria, which appears to be a result of the balance of power on the ground according to the periodicity, the magazine quoted a report issued by a Gulf embassy in Moscow detailing the deals made during the talks.

But Riyadh demanded in return that Russia press Iran to retreat, militarily and economically, in Syria. This demand appears to be in line with the Kremlin's current policies, with Russia already seeking to limit Tehran's military expansion in Syria.

The French daily said earlier that Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to reduce the influence of the Iranian-backed Shiite groups in Syria, particularly Hezbollah, in response to a promise he made with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to refrain from supporting groups loyal to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

According to sources close to the Russian embassy in Damascus, the Saudi monarch told the Russian president during his recent visit that he had no problem with the survival of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for a transitional period or even more, but his problem is in the relationship Which is gathering the "Assad" in Tehran, specifically the Iranian leader Ali Khamenei.

The sources added that the King "Salman" announced his country's readiness to support a political track in which Assad remains the president of Syria, helping Moscow to ease the deep relationship between Tehran and Damascus, reflecting the reduction of Iranian influence in both Syria and Lebanon.

But the same sources said that Putin had shown some kind of realistic neutrality about the relationship between Damascus and Tehran, stressing that Moscow was unable to force Assad to distance himself from Iran.

Putin said that this issue is not one of Moscow's priorities, nor can it pressure Tehran to reduce the relationship between the two sides. Moscow will not push itself to break a relationship of this kind, but it can help make this relationship more positive in influencing the region's files.
