TEHRAN (Reuters) - At least 90 university students have been arrested since anti-regime demonstrations began more than a week ago, said Mohammad Sadeghi, a member of Iran's Education and Research Committee.

This came in a press statement made by "Sadeghi" to the Iranian news agency "Elna", commenting on the demonstrations and protests against the regime, which began on 28 December last.

The Iranian MP revealed that the fate of 10 students among the detainees is still vague, pointing out that investigations into their fate is still ongoing and that the one who stopped them is still unknown.

He pointed out that the information obtained from the Ministry of Higher Education, stating that many of the students who were arrested have nothing to do with the demonstrations.

He stressed that the majority of the students were arrested in places far from the demonstrations or near the addresses of their homes.

He stressed that the measures taken against these students will increase the tension in the country.

He confirmed that 58 of the students were studying at different universities in Tehran.

He explained that a decision was issued for the temporary detention of some students and a number of others were released in exchange for financial guarantees.

For nearly 10 days, Iran has been witnessing protests in the cities of Mashhad and Kashmer (northeast), protests against the cost of living, before turning later into demonstrations that espouse political slogans.

Demonstrations later spread to dozens of cities, including the capital Tehran and the religious capital of Qom, leaving at least 24 dead and scores wounded, while security forces arrested more than 1,000 protesters.
