BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament has been asked by the Iraqi government to disclose details of security agreements with the US administration and neighboring countries in a first reaction to a US military spokesman's comments on the need for his troops to stay in Iraq, a report said on Friday.
"The foreign forces are still present in many areas of the west of the country, especially in Anbar province."
He pointed to the existence of a previous security agreement between Baghdad and Washington to "eliminate the urging and provide the necessary support for Iraqi forces in the field of training and others," pointing out that "the same situation applies to the Turkish troops stationed in Bashiqa and Sinjar where more than a thousand military."
And called on the government to "determine the duration of the survival of these forces and their tasks and many and the nature of the agreement concluded with them, whether American or Turkish."
"I came with the US Marines to Iraq in 2003 because we thought that was the right thing to do," said Colonel Seth W. Folsom, spokesman for US operations in western Iraq. But now the war has changed and is no longer itself. "
"I think the US forces are still needed here, despite the liberation of Anbar and the western region of Iraq, but what we are trying to do with the Iraqi security forces is to help them boost their gains," he said.
The newspaper quoted an early military source as saying that "the Iraqi government entered into an agreement with the US administration as an extension of the strategic framework agreement that ended years ago, and requires Iraq to help eliminate the oppressor."
"Some are trying to exploit the presence of US forces and to use the elections," the newspaper source said.
