The US State Department announced on Thursday that its minister, Michael Pompeo, had made a phone call with the new Iraqi parliament speaker Mohamed Halboussi.
The ministry said in a statement today that Pompeo congratulated Halaboussi on his new position and stressed that the United States looks forward to working with him in this new and more important role.
The statement added that "Pompeo pledged to continue the detainee with the Iraqis as they seek security, prosperity and stability."
The statement added that Pompeo "confirmed his support for Iraq's territorial sovereignty, especially at this critical time."
Pompeo also pointed out his support for the efforts to form a moderate government, according to the constitutional timetable, which responds to the aspirations of the Iraqi people, the statement said.
