[size=18]A US State Department official accused Iran of attacking Balad Air Force Base north of Baghdad, indicating at the same time that the military leadership was conducting the necessary investigations.

Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker told reporters: "We are awaiting all evidence ... but there is a high possibility that Iran is responsible for it."

On December 5, three missiles fell on Balad Air Force Base (80 km north of Baghdad).

American forces have been present for years in several Iraqi military and air bases in the provinces of Anbar, Salahuddin, Nineveh, and the capital, Baghdad, within the international coalition, according to the security agreement between Iraq and the United States of America.
