     Baghdad: Mustafa Al-Hashemi

The Secretary-General of the Businessmen Union, Abdul-Hassan Al-Ziyadi, who is in charge of the economic file in Iraq, called for the investment of the sulfur and phosphate fields in the country, whose reserves reach appropriate numbers to be a national wealth similar to oil, at a time when conditions dictate the acceleration of diversification of non-oil resources, especially since the two minerals are in circulation Globally, they have almost fixed price in the market

Al-Ziyadi added in a statement to "Al-Sabah" that "the time is right now to diversify Iraq's financial revenues from non-oil sectors, especially since Iraq possesses other resources such as sulfur and phosphates and has not exported them as it exports oil."

He continued, "Although the two minerals are traded on the global stock exchange and enjoy a great demand related to the volume of their uses in the medical and agricultural fields, no plans have been put in place to adopt them as a substitute for oil to achieve the additional revenues it needs."

The Secretary-General of the Businessmen Union considered “the necessity of studying the declaration of sulfur and phosphates as a national exportable wealth, as they have near-fixed prices in global markets, and they are rarely subject to a collapse or decline in their prices, as is the case in the market.

The assistant professor at Anbar University, Dr. Arak Al-Fahdawi, confirmed to “Al-Sabah” that phosphates, from which the province’s reserves amounted to about one billion tons, are strategic minerals in Iraq, estimating the years of depletion of its reserves by more than 3000 years.

For his part, academic economist Dr. Majid Al-Baidani called for diversifying the economy of crude and natural resources by launching a licensing round for minerals after knowing the proven reserves inside Iraq.

Al-Baydani told Al-Sabah that it is necessary to “diversify the country's resources at the current stage by studying the announcement of a licensing round for minerals, after conducting a geological survey in areas where phosphates, sulfur and minerals are widespread.

He explained that «the aim of conducting the survey comes to give the accurate numbers that represent the real reserves of all the important minerals in the country in order to invest them as a national wealth that serves the stability of Iraqi exports from them.

Because diversifying the economy of natural resources represents a comfortable option, similar to countries that have relied on natural resources through which they have achieved an economy.
