Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
In less than 24 hours, the province of Babylon witnessed two horrific crimes, not the first of their kind, the extermination of an entire family, and the suicide of a man after killing his wife.
The severity of these crimes escalated during the past months, and caused the deaths of dozens of citizens in the various governorates of the country, while specialists attributed the reasons for their expansion to the vacuum that the citizen is witnessing, the poor economic conditions, and the accumulations left by wars.
Yesterday, Saturday, a security source told Al-Mada that "a young man killed five members of one family in Al-Musayyib district, north of Babil Governorate."
The source added that the young man "shot the family members and killed them on the spot," attributing the cause of "the incident to family disputes."
He pointed out that "the young man tried to commit suicide by shooting himself, but he did not die and was subsequently transferred to Hilla Republican Hospital for treatment."
On the other hand, the Babylon Police Command confirmed that the cause of the accident was "a family dispute."
In a statement received by Al-Mada, the leadership stated that "a security force cordoned off the place, and forensic experts began to conduct on-site investigation of the incident and seize the weapon used, a type of Kalashnikov rifle."
And the leadership pointed out that, "a heavy guard was placed on the killer, who was lying in intensive care after attempting to commit suicide."
Half an hour did not pass, until the governorate witnessed another crime, which was the suicide of a person after killing his wife.
A security source told (Al-Mada), that "a man killed his wife yesterday morning, then shot himself and died immediately in the (Sarideeb) area within the Nile district, north of the city of Hilla, the center of Babil Governorate."
These “family” crimes were not the first in Babylon, as the governorate witnessed a similar tragedy that occurred only a month ago, when a father killed his daughter, her mother and her grandmother before he committed suicide in the center of the city of Hilla.
Commenting on these events, Shaima Abdel Aziz, a professor of psychology at the University of Baghdad, said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the cases of domestic violence that Iraq is witnessing are an accumulation of the harsh conditions that the citizen has gone through and tasted the scourge of wars and the unstable economic situation."
Abdel Aziz added, "The results of our psychological study predicted that Iraq would go through dangerous phenomena that require the solidarity of the security authorities and citizens."
The professor of psychology pointed out, "Most of the Iraqis need psychological rehabilitation, especially young people, by subjecting them to therapeutic and psychological programs."
And she continued, "It is necessary to diagnose cases of domestic violence and contain the perpetrators before they reach dangerous stages that lead to murder, as happened in Babylon and before it in more than one province."
Abdel Aziz indicated that "the economic aspect and the lack of job opportunities have a significant impact on the occurrence and expansion of these crimes."
In turn, the researcher in security affairs, Ali Al-Baydar, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that “the security corps cannot confront those crimes that are classified as societal crimes, but rather treat this issue according to several directions, including psychological, economic, security, and even political, in addition to spreading culture and education. between the classes of the people, which is quickly reflected in the differences, as well as the crimes.”
Al-Baydar added, "Family crimes are not legally marketed or dealt with according to the law, but are considered among the disciplinary measures."
The researcher believes in the security issue, that “there is a great vacuum in which a large segment of Iraqi society lives, which needs job opportunities and rehabilitation programs, in addition to means of entertainment, sports stadiums and many other means that can fill the void of this segment and limit its criminal behavior.”
Among the reasons for the expansion of these crimes also, according to Al-Baidar, is that “there is a weakness in imposing the authority of the state, and a lack of severe accountability for these crimes.”
It is noteworthy that Iraq recorded during the year 2020, 4,700 murders that had criminal motives, compared to 4,180 crimes in 2019.
