The United Nations Human Rights Committee has issued a report on domestic violence and counter-terrorism in Iraq.
In its report, the committee stated that the legislative provisions in the Iraqi criminal law, especially those related to rape, which provide for a reduced sentence for so-called honor crimes in certain circumstances, are still discriminatory against women, calling on Iraq to expedite the adoption of the domestic violence bill and review its domestic legislation to repeal or amend All provisions that discriminate against women and allow violence against them. With regard to combating terrorism, the committee urged Iraq to bring its anti-terrorism legislation into line with international human rights standards.
