An international relief organization spoke about its implementation of eight service projects in Nineveh during the current year, stressing that the campaign included two water pumping stations, public squares and two schools, pointing out that this happened in the districts of Mosul, Tal Afar and Sinjar, but indicated the continuation of the fragile humanitarian situation in Iraq for about a year. With more than 2.5 million people still in need of assistance.
The international humanitarian relief organization ACTED said in a new report translated by Al-Mada that "the humanitarian situation in Iraq is still fragile, more than four years after the end of large-scale military operations against the terrorist organization ISIS."
The report continued, “This is represented in a situation of chronic internal displacement, weak social ties, lands and areas contaminated with mines and explosive materials on a large scale, incomplete rehabilitation work for damaged homes, the absence of basic services and the absence of livelihood opportunities.”
He pointed out that "more than 2.5 million people are still in need of assistance as a result of the war, with more than 900,000 people living in acute destitution with catastrophic, extreme living standards." The report stressed, “The (ACTED) international organization; In order to enhance the conditions of basic services and rebuild them, it has implemented eight projects during 2022 funded by it across different regions of Nineveh Governorate.
He explained, "The campaign included Sinjar, Tal Afar, and various neighborhoods of the city of Mosul," and he considered the projects as "having a direct impact through the cash-for-work formula."
The report emphasized that "the projects implemented in these areas of Nineveh Governorate ranged from public service projects such as roads, public squares, water stations and schools."
He pointed out, "The implementation of a section of these projects with a direct quick impact through the cash-for-work payment outlet, which provides short-term cash income that results in job opportunities for more than 260 families."
He noted, "The organization proposed to contribute to improving the conditions of Nineveh Governorate through direct impact projects to bridge the gap between humanitarian assistance and provide support to areas experiencing an increase in the number of returnees from displaced people living in difficult conditions."
The report stressed that “impact or direct impact projects are designed to provide support that improves the standard of living and creates direct and indirect long-term benefits for a large group of the population.”
He stated, "Every single project is designed to improve the chances of the needy's access to services according to their region and to ensure that the benefit reaches all, whether they are returnees or displaced families."
The report continued, "This approach helps in the practice of humanitarian services efforts undertaken by the government and other partners from humanitarian and development organizations to lay the foundations for sustainable solutions to the issue of chronic displacement." He continues, "The affected groups in the areas selected through these eight projects have different needs."
The report continues, “The effects of these projects cover the needs of both women, men and children of communities and families in need, ranging from increasing safety rates and being satisfied with drinking water supplies, increasing the rates of children’s enrollment in schools, reducing the damage of poor sewage channels, and providing safe spaces for social and recreational gatherings. “.
And he added, "The (ACTID) organization, through communication with local authorities, aims to integrate needy families with these projects and accommodate them."
The report spoke of “the organization’s rehabilitation of two water pumping stations in Mosul, public squares in Sinjar and Tal Afar, two schools and a street in one of Mosul’s neighborhoods.”
He added, "Part of the project aims to generate income sources in the short term for affected families and individuals through the principle of cash payment for work, and job opportunities were provided to improve the lives of 260 affected families."
The report pointed out that "this project contributes to solving the problem of financial destitution, encouraging local economic growth and providing a guarantee for displaced families returning to their areas of origin."
He stressed, "there are approximately 632,000 displaced people and returnees with urgent living needs, including 32,000 people living in very harsh conditions."
The report went on to say, "Women and girls, especially families headed by women, are the most affected families and in need of assistance, and they face challenges in determining their sources of livelihood."
The Ministry of Migration and Displacement had confirmed earlier that most of the remaining displaced residents of Sinjar district, in addition to others from the vicinity of the city of Mosul and Salah al-Din governorate, stressing that returning them to their homes would be voluntary, and it talked about its movement on the original areas of the displaced in order to provide an environment Amna precedes their return, expecting that the file will be completely resolved within two years.
It is noteworthy that Iraq has witnessed the largest wave of displacement since 2014, during the control of the terrorist organization ISIS on a number of Iraqi provinces, and the displaced were distributed among tents and other provinces, as well as others resorting to emigration outside the country.
