Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani continued his meetings in New York with world leaders and heads of international organizations, on the sidelines of his participation in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, explaining Iraq's vision and plans in the fields of development, economy, diplomacy and the desired stable relations with all countries of the world. Yesterday evening, Monday, Baghdad time, al-Sudani received US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at his residence in New York.
During the meeting, according to a statement from his office received by "Al-Sabah", bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to enhance joint cooperation in various fields were discussed, as well as the latest developments in the region, regarding the recent escalation in Lebanon, as the Prime Minister urged the need to make all necessary efforts to quell the war and stop the ongoing aggression in Gaza and Lebanon, which threatens to expand the conflict in the region and destabilize regional and international security.
Al-Sudani stressed that the world and the region are going through a difficult time, and Iraq has repeatedly warned of the consequences of a comprehensive war that could break out at any time due to the lack of solutions on the part of the international community and its relevant institutions, stressing the need for the United Nations to fulfill its duties and responsibilities towards the aggressive crimes that Gaza and Lebanon are being subjected to, targeting civilians, especially women and children.
The meeting touched on areas of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, as well as discussing the file of the international coalition and continuing dialogues to end its presence in Iraq, and moving to build bilateral cooperation relations with coalition countries in various fields and sectors.
The Prime Minister also met with the Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Catherine Russell, and according to a statement by the Prime Minister's Media Office, the meeting witnessed discussions on children's issues and rights and related international laws, and the progress achieved by Iraq in this field.
The Prime Minister urged "the international organization to cooperate with the Iraqi private sector in the field of education and higher education," stressing "the readiness of Iraqi governmental and private universities to benefit maximum from cooperation with UNICEF in all available fields."
For her part, Russell expressed her "appreciation for meeting the Prime Minister, in order to open broader work paths and partnership between Iraq and the programs of the international organization," expressing "her welcome and readiness to accept his invitation to visit Iraq," and stated that "the organization has recorded important developments in the field of family and child in Iraq during the work of the current government."
The Prime Minister also met with the Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization, Dima Al-Yahya, and at the beginning of the meeting, Al-Sudani expressed his "thanks for Dima Al-Yahya's serious efforts and interest in Iraq's accession to the organization, which represents a personal interest for him, with what the organization can provide in terms of expertise, skills, training, and codification of laws and rules for all digital businesses, most notably digital trade and how to activate and benefit from it."
Al-Sudani stated that "a higher committee for digital transformation in Iraq has been formed, headed by the Prime Minister, and the committee will develop a comprehensive strategy for digital businesses and artificial intelligence, in line with Iraq's ambitions and international requirements in the field of digital transformation, extending an official invitation to Al-Yahya to visit Iraq."
For her part, Al-Yahya welcomed "Iraq's approval to join the Digital Cooperation Organization, as there are multiple action plans and programs that will soon see the light in Iraq after signing the organization's charter, and she stressed that Iraq will be one of the countries benefiting from the transfer of skills and training."
The Prime Minister also received at his residence in New York the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rola Abdullah Dashti.
A statement from the Prime Minister's media office stated that "the meeting witnessed a review of all the current programs of the international organization in the fields of social protection, water, environment, and confronting climate change, and the areas in which cooperation between Iraq and ESCWA can be developed, especially in supporting digital transformation, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence."
Al-Sudani appreciated "the efforts of the international organization during the previous stage," stressing that "the Iraqi experience in social protection is one of the pioneering experiences, as it witnessed the transition from the stage of providing cash subsidies to granting conditional subsidies to address multidimensional poverty, as social protection included approximately 2.2 million families, in addition to the importance of cooperation with ESCWA within the framework of updating the approved poverty reduction strategy, explaining the government's endeavor to adopt the sectors of digital transformation and artificial intelligence, and to borrow from the best experiences to implement them at the national level."
During the meeting, Al-Sudani addressed "ways to activate communication with the international organization by enhancing Iraq's share of employees in ESCWA, especially since Iraq has qualified technical and technological expertise, and indicated the necessity of opening up horizons for cooperation in the field of implementing the population census that will be implemented at the end of this year, in addition to developing programs aimed at empowering women economically.
" The Prime Minister raised "the issue of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been subjected to continuous aggression for months, and the role of the international organization, and ESCWA in particular, in alleviating the impact of these conditions on our Palestinian people in all occupied territories."
For her part, Dashti expressed "ESCWA's desire to provide expertise and technical support in all development fields, especially supporting Iraqi social protection programs to be part of the stage of improving the conditions of beneficiaries, by benefiting from successful international experiences in this path."
The Prime Minister received the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto, at his residence in New York. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, supporting their frameworks in many fields, ways to consolidate joint cooperation, and everything that would enhance the interests of their peoples. The two sides also discussed the file of Kenyan workers in Iraq.
The Prime Minister referred to "the foundations of the relationship between Iraq and Kenya, which date back decades," stressing "the need to enhance mutual diplomatic representation and develop the level of fruitful economic partnership."
For his part, the Kenyan President praised "Iraq's pivotal role in the region and its efforts to enhance security and stability there. He also expressed his country's desire to build the best relations between the two friendly countries in the economic and trade fields."
Al-Sudani also received Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council of the Republic of Yemen. The meeting witnessed a review of the overall internal situation in Yemen, the surrounding regional situation, its developments and its impact on the region.
Al-Sudani pointed out, according to a statement from his media office, "the depth of the historical and fraternal ties that unite Iraq and Yemen," stressing "Iraq's keenness to support the stability of Yemen, the importance of finding solutions through internal dialogue, and providing appropriate conditions for the brotherly Yemeni people to enjoy prosperity and development.
" For his part, Al-Alimi welcomed "the reopening of embassies between the two countries, and considered it a supportive step to strengthen fraternal relations and support communication between the two brotherly peoples."
Al-Sudani received the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volk Turk, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the night before last Sunday, Baghdad time, and the meeting witnessed discussions on the qualitative development witnessed by the human rights file in Iraq.
Al-Sudani stressed, according to a statement from his media office, that "the government views the Universal Periodic Review as an essential mechanism in promoting and protecting human rights," noting that "Iraq will discuss its fourth periodic report in January of next year after it voted on it in the last cabinet meeting."
The Prime Minister stressed "Iraq's commitment to human rights standards, as a party to international agreements and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights," appreciating "the efforts of the human rights team working within the UNAMI mission in Iraq, and the breadth of measures implemented by the Iraqi government to preserve the rights of minorities and sects of the Iraqi people, and to provide assistance to victims of terrorism and the dictatorial regime."
Al-Sudani explained that "Iraq has succeeded in establishing a successful experience in the field of transitional justice, and the government has proceeded with the legal and executive framework for all human rights principles, in accordance with the Iraqi constitution and approved international standards."
For his part, the High Commissioner indicated "the Commission's desire to open a representative office in Iraq, in order to raise the level of cooperation in the field of capacity development, technical, economic and social cooperation, and in the field of the environment."
