Shafaq News/ The Organization for Defending the Rights of Foreign Workers announced, on Wednesday, the number of foreign workers in the Kurdistan Region, and the most prominent suffering they face while working in the region in general and Sulaymaniyah in particular.
The organization's official, Hama Hazar, told Shafak News Agency, "According to official statistics, there are about 27,000 foreign workers working in the governorates of the Kurdistan Region, and in different professions."
Hazar added, "The pressure on foreign workers is much less than the pressure on local workers because the financial returns are proportional to their limited needs, but they suffer from the high costs of work permits that push some of them to deceive in order to obtain it, and they also suffer from poor experience and a language problem. In dealing with Kurdistan, this requires their training support.”
The organization's official indicated, "Some of the foreign workers enter the Kurdistan Region as tourists, but days after entering, they practice one of the professions that are suitable for the possibility."
Regarding the mechanism of entry of foreign workers into the Kurdistan Region, Hazar explained, "The entry mechanism is through global procedures for the entry of foreign workers to any country, as it requires that there be a contract between the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in the worker's main country, and the Ministry of Labor in the host country."
However, he added: "Because the Kurdistan Region is not a country, the region is forced to deal with companies that deal with some countries that attract foreign workers, such as the UAE."
