the State of Law Coalition confirmed, on Saturday, that the head of the coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, believes in the sovereignty and independence of the judiciary.
The coalition stated in a statement, which Mawazine News received a copy of, that it "expresses its deep astonishment at the statements made by former Minister of Justice Dara Noureddine in a television interview, about the intervention of the leader of the coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, in preventing the implementation of death sentences while he was in charge of heading the government." ".
He added, "Minister Nouruddin's statements are unfounded, and that the implementation of death sentences in accordance with the Iraqi constitution requires the approval of the President of the Republic, provided that the Ministry of Justice undertakes the execution of death sentences after receiving special decrees from the presidency, and therefore the constitution does not give any authority other than the judiciary."
