The Ministry of Interior stated that it does not grant Iraqi nationality to every foreign resident who has completed his ten-year residency period, in the event that there are security or negative indications against him.
The Director of Nationality Affairs in the Ministry, Brigadier General Kamal Abdul-Amir Kazem, said in a statement to "Al-Sabah": that his directorate relies on the laws contained in the Iraqi constitution to issue its decisions, including that Iraqi nationality is not granted to a resident who has completed his 10-year residency period in the country, if he It has a security or negative indicator, indicating that nationality is granted to a resident who is married to an Iraqi man or woman, and his residence period is five years, and also in the absence of a security indicator against him.
And he indicated that Iraqi nationality is granted in accordance with Law No. 26 of 2006, and that Article VI, secondly, affirms that it is not permissible to grant nationality to Palestinians residing in the country, with the aim of ensuring their return to their homeland, with the exception of children whose mother is Iraqi, indicating that the law specified the criteria for granting it by being the person Of Iraqi parents or one of them, and a foreigner who has a residence permit for ten years and is married to an Iraqi, is granted citizenship after five years of marriage, stressing that there is no exception to these controls.
Abdul Amir confirmed that Iraqi nationality was granted to all citizens from whom the dictatorial regime overthrew the nationalities, in addition to the Faili Kurds who were granted Iraqi nationality in accordance with the law, indicating that there is coordination with the regional government to grant citizenship because the region is bound by the controls and instructions issued by the Ministry of Interior and the central government. .
