The economist Alaa Al-Atabi pointed out to "Iraq's need to develop more than 1,000 km of railway lines as a first stage and in different directions for its active role in economic performance, as it represents the most important joints of the infrastructure of the transport sector in the country and provides transportation at costs that suit the income of Iraqi families, at a time when In it, attention is drawn to the establishment of the path of development, and the experiences of the economically developed countries that have achieved great successes and have become the most important at the level of the globe, starting from the railways, which makes us demand the development of the reality of the railways and make it an effective artery in the movement of transport in its various specializations, as the need to transport citizens and goods through railways escalates Iron".
And he stressed, "the inevitability that future plans include expanding the railway network between all the governorates of Iraq, in a way that achieves great flexibility in transportation, in addition to" the need to move towards rehabilitating the current lines between Baghdad, Basra, Baghdad and Mosul and make them more active, and in a way that activates the movement of trains faster. in accordance with the wishes of the citizens.
Al-Atabi pointed out that "transportation by trains is adopted all over the world and provides ideal services in many countries that now have a network of trains that can be relied upon for rapid transportation between cities, which shortens time and costs that do not burden the citizen, but sometimes transportation is more enjoyable than that of cars." .
Economic expert Abd al-Hussein al-Hakim stressed that "the tendency to adopt trains inside and outside cities is a matter that achieves great benefit for the country, and raises the level of services provided to the public, and here there can be bilateral partnerships between the Ministry of Transport and the private sector to establish such important projects that will change The reality of life in Iraq, and it is also possible to go towards local or international direct investments to implement railway networks inside and outside cities, as well as the possibility of implementing such projects through joint investment between the local and international private sectors.
He stressed the importance of going to implement such projects, and that work is done to prepare the necessary plans for the implementation of such projects by local consulting offices. field and work to transfer it to Iraq.
He pointed out that "the reality of transportation in Iraq needs to be organized and developed, as the country is witnessing a large population growth that requires that we move towards safe, developed and cheap transportation that suits all segments of society, and raises the level of services provided to all citizens."
And the Ministry of Transport confirmed its endeavor to restart the suspended railway lines, and while it explained the reasons for stopping the western and eastern lines, it indicated that the two lines that are currently operating are the southern and northern, the first for travelers and the other for transporting oil derivatives only.
"The southern line (Baghdad - Basra) is 100% effective, and passes through the governorates of Babel, Diwaniyah, Muthanna, and Dhi Qar," said the ministry's spokeswoman, Shatha Radhi. She explained that "this line transports passengers, and it starts from Baghdad towards Basra, and an upward flight from Basra towards Baghdad, and it departs at eight o'clock in the evening from Baghdad, and at eight thirty from Basra."
As for the northern line, (Baghdad - Mosul - Rabia), on the Iraqi-Syrian border, this line, according to Radhi, "is currently working only to transport oil derivatives and black oil from the Baiji and Qayyarah refineries. And work is continuing to restart it again.” Regarding the western line (Baghdad - Husaiba - Akashat), the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport stated, “This line has stopped working due to the sabotage and destruction of its lines, and there is a major rehabilitation campaign to reactivate it again.”
