    Baghdad today - Baghdad
There are many reasons behind committing organized crimes in Iraq, but one fact remains, which is the occurrence of the crime and the “death” of the victim, while some link these crimes to “tribal customs” and their role in society, between pursuing and holding the perpetrators accountable and obtaining rights, side by side with the law, While researchers in social affairs had a different opinion.
Iraq ranked eighth in the Global Organized Crime Index for 2021. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
     Tribal customs
Social affairs researcher Mustafa Al-Taie had another opinion regarding the relationship of tribal customs to “organized crimes,” and the extent to which they are linked to the rise and fall of the rate.
Al-Taie told Baghdad Today, Wednesday (September 27, 2023), that “tribal customs have nothing to do with the issue of organized crimes or with reducing or increasing their rates,” indicating that “whoever commits these crimes is always not committed to tribal customs. Some clans even declare their innocence of many of those involved in various crimes.”
The researcher explains that "many clans and different governorates have signed pledges not to stand with people involved in murder and dishonor crimes."
He added, "But these issues remain ineffective on the psychological behavior of some people, who live off organized crimes of all kinds."
He added, "Therefore, there is difficulty facing the tribes in having a role in reducing the crime rate, which may be higher than in the past." [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Crime rate
Crime rates - increase or decrease - are subject to study, evaluation and analysis at the Ministry of Interior annually, and in light of the results, the annual strategic plans or the five-year intermediate plan are amended, according to Ministry of Interior spokesman Major General Khaled Al-Muhanna.
Al-Muhanna explained in a press statement on (July 13, 2023), that “since the year 2023 has not ended, the statistics are still changing, but when comparing crime rates between the years 2021 and 2022, it is noted that there is an increase in the rates of some crimes, and a decrease in others.”
Al-Muhanna adds, “As for the crimes that have recorded an increase in their rates, they are related to the economic nature,” stressing that “the Ministry of Interior is working to develop its methods and focus on the infrastructure of some police formations, and plan for their reconstruction, arming, and training.”

    Motives for crime
Security expert Ahmed Al-Sharifi confirms that the percentage of organized crimes is almost equal in the governorates, but it is highest in the capital, Baghdad, due to population density.
Al-Sharifi said to “Baghdad Today” that “the rates of organized crime are almost equal in the governorates, especially since the majority of these crimes are financially motivated and some of them are for personal and family reasons, but Baghdad remains the highest in organized crime rates among all the governorates, and this is due to its population density.” "which differs from other governorates."
He points out that “there is a development in the performance of the investigative and criminal teams, and this matter has greatly contributed to uncovering many mysterious crimes. This development also certainly has a benefit in the decline of organized crimes, but these crimes remain primarily linked to the economic situation in which some citizens live.” ".

    Women's participation
Recently, the rate of women joining organized crime gangs in Iraq has increased, as the gangs have begun to use the female element in the crimes they carry out, something that Iraq was not previously accustomed to.
On (September 13, 2023), social affairs researcher Mustafa Al-Taie confirmed that “there is an increase in the percentage of women’s participation in organized crime gangs, and this matter is not hidden from everyone,” indicating that “one of the reasons for the increase in these percentages is the deterioration of the living and economic situation of some families, which "He pushed women to be part of such gangs."
