The spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said on Sunday that the number of informal settlements in the country exceeded 4,000.
Al-Hindawi added in an interview with the official Al-Sabah newspaper, “The capital, Baghdad, has the largest number (among the provinces) with about 1,000 random gatherings.”
He continued, "The number of slums in Basra Governorate is 700," noting that "the rest of the governorates are inhabited by approximately 4 million Iraqis, who constitute 9 percent of the total population in the country."
Al-Hindawi pointed out that "the residential cities that the Ministry of Housing and the National Investment Authority are working on will be an important addition to the housing sector and will contribute to addressing a large part of the crisis."
