The Election Commission announced the approval of the final voter register forms for the polling stations for the upcoming governorate council elections. This comes as a deputy called for keeping federal and local service projects away from partisan and electoral political propaganda.
The Commission’s spokesperson, Jumana Al-Ghalai, told the Iraqi News Agency “INA”: “The Board of Commissioners approved the final voter register forms for the polling stations and the wall voter lists for the irregular governorate council elections in the region for the year 2023.”
Meanwhile, Hussein Habib Al-Zirjawi, a member of the House of Representatives from the Independents bloc, called for keeping provincial council elections away from service projects and not including them in the candidates’ electoral propaganda as they are a citizen’s entitlement, urging the Election Commission to monitor this matter.
Al-Zirjawi told Al-Sabah: “The provincial council elections are the most important step in the coming days. We hope that the competition between the candidates for the provincial councils will be a clean competition, and that public money will not be exploited in this matter, as we note that there are many governors who have formed electoral alliances and these The alliances include a number of candidates.”
He added, "It has been identified that some candidates and governors are roaming over service projects that are essentially the right of the Iraqi citizen, and these projects have begun to be exploited for electoral purposes," indicating that "the state's resources cannot be exploited by any specific party."
Al-Zirjawi stressed the need for the Election Commission to follow up on “practices that violate the law and the constitution, as it is shameful to exploit people’s needs for services and basic matters of life for electoral gains.”
