Iraq confronts climate change with carbon reduction projects

Climate change and global warming have attracted great attention from the Iraqi government and placed it among the priorities of its agenda, attracting the world’s attention to Baghdad to address carbon reduction and confront the increase in population and pollution, while the European Union pledged to support climate adaptation and transformation processes in Iraq by providing hundreds Millions of dollars.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Muhammad Tamim, said during the (Iraq and Climate Change Initiative) conference held by the European Union mission in Iraq and attended by Al-Sabah: “The government has taken several decisions to confront climate change and build real partnerships between various sectors to ensure the achievement and sustainability of economic growth.” "Ensuring food and water security, and the transition towards clean and renewable energy."
Tamim added, "Iraq is witnessing rapid population growth, which has led to a major expansion of cities, as the proportion of the urban population has reached 70 percent, compared to 30 percent of the rural population."
In the field of reducing carbon emissions, Tamim explained, “We have prepared a plan to launch a package of projects financed by carbon bonds, which aim to reduce carbon emissions and enhance Iraq’s stock of carbon bonds through optimal investment of associated gas and reducing the rate of its combustion in all oil fields.”
In turn, Environment Minister Nizar Amedi said: “Iraq seeks to create a suitable environment in establishing the concepts of sustainable green growth and nature-based solutions, which requires mobilizing international support of all kinds to create opportunities that are in harmony with its national needs.”
Amidi stressed the necessity of "continuing with national policies and strategies in both aspects of mitigating and adapting to negative impacts by securing the two most basic elements, which are food and a fair share of water, in order to reduce the impact and severity of environmental deterioration due to climate change and increase its resilience to climate change."
Meanwhile, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, Thomas Seiler, stated in his speech at the conference: “The seven major member states of the Union will pledge to provide a lot of funds for climate adaptation and transformation operations, in addition to mobilizing the private sector to invest in climate action, specifically in Iraq.
”
Seiler added, "The Union has increased its support for the Iraqi government regarding climate action by more than 130 million euros for programs related to enhancing and reducing adaptation to climate change, and the transition to a low-carbon economy," explaining that "Iraq is making progress in climate action, preparing infrastructure, achieving sustainability, and transformation." In energy.
The European Union Ambassador pointed out "the implementation of programs during the year 2024 in the field of climate education, skills development, greenhouses, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions," noting that "the European Union's continued support to Iraq in this field."
In turn, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Environmental Affairs, Ali Al-Lami, stated, “Work is underway with the Ministries of Planning and Environment to transform plans and strategies into implementable projects and allocate resources for that,” indicating, “We often attribute water scarcity to climate change, but the main reason is withholding it from its sources.
”
Al-Lami continued, "There is an effort to adapt to climate change, including granting loans for modern irrigation techniques, as well as shifting toward creating agricultural varieties that tolerate heat and drought."
