Director of Nineveh Antiquities and Heritage, Khair al-Din Ahmed, told “Al-Sabah”: Foreign missions specialized in joint scientific excavations were able, along with the staff of the Inspectorate, to complete about 60 percent of the excavations of the destroyed antiquities inside Nineveh Governorate, as the University of Bologna excavation mission and a team completed The Italian exploration mission and the Canadian Toronto mission carried out their entire work within the province.
He added that another new excavation process will begin in the archaeological city of Nimrud by the University of Pennsylvania for an unspecified period.
Ahmed continued that the Directorate, under the guidance of the Minister of Culture and Antiquities, Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, embarked on a maintenance, restoration and reconstruction campaign within the site of the archaeological city of Bashtabiya after the completion of the entire excavations and plans for its restoration.
He stated that the campaign for the maintenance, restoration and reconstruction of the archaeological site of Bashtabiya will be under the supervision of UNESCO and a team specialized in antiquities and excavations affiliated with the directorate.
