    Baghdad today - Erbil
Kurdish political reactions varied regarding the Federal Court's decision to terminate Muhammad al-Halbousi's membership in the House of Representatives, as the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan called for respecting the will of the judiciary, while the Kurdistan Democratic Party referred to a "plan to target two components" in the country.
Last Tuesday, the Federal Supreme Court in Baghdad issued a final decision binding on all authorities to withdraw the membership of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Rekan Al-Halbousi, and consider it effective from the date of its issuance.
    Respect the Iraqi judiciary
Today, Thursday (November 16, 2023), member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Mahmoud Khoshnaw, stresses the necessity of respecting the will of the judiciary and refraining from inciting sectarian strife.
In an interview with “Baghdad Today,” Khoshnaw said, “Dialogue and political discussion must be present in order to create an appropriate and constitutional environment that helps the political leadership to sustain the government’s work to serve the citizen.”

He points out that “what happened to Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi is related to the Iraqi judiciary, and as for the political aspect, we do not believe that the Federal Court is influenced by one party over another, as it was based on many evidence,” pointing out that “his party respects the decisions of the judiciary, whether the cases are taken against the party.” Or for his benefit, or with his friends and supporters, or against them.”
He continued: "The will of the judiciary must be respected and this problem must be resolved in a way that preserves its prestige and the constitutional institutions, including the House of Representatives, and we must avoid inciting sectarian and racist strife in such files."
     Scheme to target "two components"
For his part, member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafa Muhammad Karim, today, Thursday, considered the Federal Court’s decision to terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi to be linked to a plan to target the “Sunni and Kurdish” components.
In an interview with Baghdad Today, Karim said, “The decision to terminate membership indicates the existence of (a plan by Shiite leaders) to target the Kurdish and Sunni components.”
A member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party points out, "There are many files that remain hidden until needed, and this is what happened with many Sunni leaders, and we do not rule out that there will be attacks on Kurdish leaders, ministers, and representatives."
He explained, "The political process will proceed because Al-Halbousi does not have popular weight, and the tripartite alliance has ended after the formation of the (state administration), even though it was a national, cross-sectarian project."
The Kurdistan Democratic Party has previously strongly opposed decisions of the Federal Supreme Court against Kurdish figures or issues, such as excluding Hoshyar Zebari from running for the position of President of the Republic, as well as the unconstitutionality of Kurdish laws related to the export of oil, as well as sending monthly financial dues from Baghdad to Erbil. The Kurdistan Democratic Party considered at the time that “The Federal Court’s decisions contradict the Constitution and are consistent with political goals.”
