Baghdad/Al-Masala: In light of the ongoing political disputes in Iraq, calls have escalated to leave the freedom to choose the next Speaker of the House of Representatives to the members of parliament themselves, away from pressures and interference from political and party leaders. However, these calls clash with a complex political reality dominated by the wills of the parties, which makes this option out of reach.
For some time now, the Iraqi political scene has been witnessing ongoing tensions and disagreements between the various political blocs over the selection of a new Speaker of the Council of Representatives. These disagreements are intertwined with direct interventions by Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish political forces, which has further complicated the situation and made it difficult to reach a consensus on the name of the most suitable candidate for this important position.
Some Iraqi MPs point out that the diversity and multiplicity of positions and decisions, in addition to the political leaders’ insistence on the decision outside the parliament, are among the most prominent factors hindering the resolution of this issue. The leaders seek to impose a specific personality that satisfies their interests, regardless of the MPs’ opinions.
Although there are calls to give MPs the freedom to choose who will be the next Speaker of Parliament, the reality is that the almost absolute majority of MPs are subject to the will of the parties to which they belong, which makes it difficult to have a free and independent choice.
Political interventions from outside parliament, and attempts to impose certain candidates, are closely linked to the desire to preserve narrow party interests, rather than national interests. This complicates the chances of reaching a compromise that satisfies all parties, and increases the likelihood of delaying the final decision on this position.
In addition to partisan interference, political money plays a major role in determining the positions of some MPs, as it is mentioned that bribes and temptations may greatly influence their vote and choice of the Speaker of the Council. This further complicates the scene and leads to repeated postponement of the final decision.
According to sources inside parliament, the delay in electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives is primarily due to internal party differences, not national ones. Although the Sunni forces may agree to support Mahmoud al-Mashhadani’s nomination for this position, there are fears that this nomination will not pass in light of objections from some forces.
It seems that the “Progress” coalition, supported by some Shiite forces, is facing off against the “Sovereignty” and “Azm” coalitions, also supported by those Shiite forces, which further complicates the process of agreeing on a single candidate. This clear division between the political blocs reflects the extent of internal differences and increases the difficulty of reaching an agreement.
In light of the complex political scene in Iraq, calls to grant MPs the freedom to choose seem like a mere theoretical suggestion, far from the reality that is full of partisan and political interference. With the continuation of these disagreements and interferences, the issue of choosing the Speaker of the House of Representatives remains pending, which increases the state of political stagnation that the country is witnessing.
