The Director of the Coordination and Crisis Center at the Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Sarwa Rasul, confirmed that the Kurdistan Region has become a model for coexistence at the international level, and in 2014, President Barzani opened the doors of homes, mosques, schools and camps in Kurdistan to refugees and displaced persons.
Rasool said on Monday, August 19, 2024: “There are about one million and two hundred thousand refugees in the Kurdistan Region, 30 percent of whom live in camps and 70 percent in cities.”
She continued: “The Kurdistan Region has become an example of coexistence at the international level, so the issue of humanitarian aid and helping refugees has become a culture in Kurdistan and is known as that culture.”
“While these refugees were not provided with shelter in other Iraqi provinces, President Barzani decided to open the doors of the entire Kurdistan Region to them in homes, mosques, schools, camps and shelters. In other words, the entire Kurdish people participated in this process. The Kurdistan Regional Government has provided up to 80 percent of the services to the refugees without the help of the Iraqi government, and international aid is insufficient, as the Kurdistan Regional Government has been facing the ISIS war, the financial crisis and the Corona pandemic since then,” she added.
She continued, “The ninth government formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government, headed by Masrour Barzani, paid special attention to humanitarian issues, and believes in the policy of voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons. He added that the role of the Kurdistan Regional Government was not limited to supporting refugees with humanitarian aid only, but as an international party, it was able to help earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria by participating in teams and establishing relief campaigns.”
She added: “We will not change the demographic composition of Sinjar. Our condition is that the United Nations participates in the return of refugees. Under the current circumstances, refugees cannot return, and we must respect the dignified return.”
She also added: The facilities provided to refugees in the Kurdistan Region have not been provided anywhere. She said: Since last year, the Ministry of Interior has equipped a special building to issue asylum cards to serve refugees, and the process of issuing asylum cards to refugees is going well.
