Committee member Saeb Al-Hajjami told Sumarya News, “It is really important to carefully consider converting cultural and historical sites such as the Equestrian Club into residential complexes,” adding, “But this must be done with caution to preserve the cultural and historical identity of the area.”

Al-Hajjami added, "As for granting approvals to investors in such projects, the process must be transparent and based on specific criteria that protect everyone's interests and ensure equal opportunities," noting that "enhancing transparency and accurately applying laws and regulations can help reduce any possibility of favoritism and enhance trust between investors and stakeholders."

Al-Hajjami continued, "In addition, we, as a parliamentary investment committee, are against such actions that affect cultural landmarks."

An informed source revealed on Monday (August 19, 2024) that the Karkh Court specialized in integrity issued an order to stop the "seizure" of the Equestrian Club in the Al-Amiriya area in Baghdad, after attempts by influential people and "corruption whales" to control it and turn it into a residential complex.

The Equestrian Club, which has entered its 104th year since its establishment as the oldest equestrian and horse racing club in Iraq in 1920 and was transformed into an organized club in 1922, is facing an existential threat of being stripped of its unique status and of the people of Baghdad of one of the few recreational spaces in Baghdad, by transforming it into a new area of concrete blocks in the form of an investment residential complex, which the government has always stressed is a philosophy that has "proven to fail."

Observers believe that the theft of the Equestrian Club's land is a premeditated context, like the Al-Zawraa Park, which is also under consideration, despite the repeated denials of the relevant authorities regarding the conversion of the park into an investment and the construction of residential complexes, considering that presenting this information from time to time aims to test the pulse of the street and measure the extent of rejection and acceptance by citizens of this step.
